I came across this book late one night, as I lay pondering wondering about other individuals experiences.
I read the blurb and I instantly paused:
Charting her intersex discovery and her journey to self-acceptance, this book movingly portrays how being intersex impacted Kimberly's personal and family life, as well as her career. From uncovering a secret that was intentionally kept from her, to coming out to her family and friends and fighting for intersex rights, her candid and empowering story helps breakdown barriers and misconceptions of intersex people and brings to light the trauma and harmful impact medical intervention continues to have on the intersex community.
This was my story - I resonanted with it and I instantly purchased a copy from Amazon and downloaded it to my Kindle. I started reading it straight away.
Just reading her story and hearing about her finding out about being intersex later in life and the surgeries she had - resonated with me.
The way she discussed her early experiences and memories was a mirror image to mine - it was spooky.
If you are wanting to find out more about being intersex and the impact it can have on someone - then definitely check out this book.
What Zieselman does well is showcase the positive activism that is and has taken place, especially in the US.
Also, don't be surprised if you have to put the book down a few times to contemplate what you have just read - I had to this a number of times whilst reading it.
This book also gave me inspiration - it gave me inspiration to put down in words and externally through this blog of my story and my experiences. It will inspire and educate you. You'll want to become an intersex activist after reading this!
